Module 5 art gallery

A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
This  was Joseph Orffeo (1926-2013), Old Man of the Hill, 1951; Gift of Arlan Peters and Dominic DeFillippo, 2014. This  piece of art work had a huge impact on me because what i got from the art work was a gloomy night in the forest. Its dark and looks very spacious and to me this has a lot of meaning because in my life i have felt like this plenty of times where i feel all alone but the space there leaves potential for more than just nothing there are so many other things that can fill those voids . I am in love with this piece of art work it is amazing and it reminds me of myself my bad days and my good days because i love nature and this is a perfect masterpiece. I felt such a strong connection with this because when i look at it , it makes me feel hopeful about life even though it is somewhat dark. i love the dark side of it and thats what i think makes it beautiful.
This was created by Amos W. Sangster (1833-1904), Untitled, 1888; Intaglio etching with two vignettes, 16 ½ x 25 ½ inches; Gift of Paul McKenna. The reason why i feel this piece of art has mad such an impact on once again is because of the nature of the art work. it shows us what life looks like from the outside . To me this picture is completely beautiful the way that it is colorless and you can still see the beauty of nature as well as the beauty of life.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
Edith Lunt Small , The City (City of Rochester), c. 1980; acrylic on canvas, 48 x 63 inches (framed 48 3/4 x 63 15/16 x 1 5/8 inches)
I do feel a connection with this piece of work because i am from nyc and it some what reminds me that i am missing home. This piece of work is beautiful and i would love to have something like this in my apartment to remind me where I'm from because since I've moved to buffalo i have realized that not everything is fast paced like living in the city life and this picture is an absolutely beautiful way of showing a city the colors pop and it is not to heavily detailed which i love.
Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Impatiens and Love, 1/28/60; colored graphite, 6 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches (Frame: 10 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches); Gift of Mrs. Harold Olmsted, 1972
I also feel a connection with this piece of artwork because it is a flower and it shows the simplicity of beauty . Sometimes beauty can be the little things and doesn't have to have a lot to back it up. This flower one the page with a little heart at the bottom reminds me of something that i would draw because sometimes i am very simple with my drawings even though I'm not that great of a artist i feel like the simple things can truly show your emotion or bring out emotions in others.
C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?
This master piece is ....Alexander O. Levy (1881-1947), Lady in White, undated; oil on canvas (possibly an advertising piece), 30 x 26 inches; Bequest of Frank Szuba, 2002. Conserved with funds from John and Carol Kociela.
I feel like when i look at this i don't know what exactly is going on .  This is one reason why i would like to know more about this picture . the women is sitting there and it looks like birds are flying by behind her and this is such a mysterious piece of artwork. I would love to learn more about it and actually know what it is meant to say to the viewers or if it can vary between the different people who see it.
This art work ...Paul Sharits (1943-1993), Declarative Mode 1C, 1976-77; colored ink on graph paper, 14 x 21 inches; Gift of Sarah Hornbacher, 1988...
I would love to more about this one because when i see all these different lines and colors i don't know what to think. Since there are so many bright colors it gives me a happy feeling which i love about it but i would love to know more about what its meaning is and how it is suppose to make people feel when viewing it . It is really a beautiful piece of work but the lines throw me off a lot because i can't look deeper than the lines.

Creating this logo was really hard because i suck extremely at drawing anything.  I had to think about all the things that i love and all the things that i dislike. The most important thing that i have learned about my logo is that even though i know i can't draw there is always a chance to begin to start  learning. I may be that great at it but it was very fun to have tried and succeeded. The most important things that i have learned from the videos and powerpoints are that i must take my time and be creative about the things that i want to do not only with art but with everything in life . This was a good experience and project to do

Module 4

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
Creating the color scheme and color wheel at first was a little confusing to me , but after speaking with one of my sisters Ruth who is a art major and she explained to me exactly how and what pencil to use for this value scale i found it interesting that  one pencil could make so many shades and its amazing to see how certain colors complement other colors dealing with the color wheel
2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I enjoyed using the pencil the most because it was interesting to see how u can change the shade by using the eraser or changing the the pressure that you put on the pencil when shading it in.
3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
The most important discovery was that that certain colors make other colors pop more than others this was very interesting to me because i never really realized this
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important info i learned was the process that artist have to go through when creating a master
piece and how much goes into learning and exploring different colors. My opinion of this video is that it was very informative and helped me understand a lot more what goes in and how much thought goes into art work.

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color is a very important concept when dealing with painting. Color begins to show us how the artist is feeling or trying to make us feel when we se the painting. These colors have meanings in these paintings . They use color for to set the mood as well as reflection of the feelings they felt when they painted or when they were where they were when they painted.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

The most intriguing aspect of color to me is that certain colors come together to create a certain mood , because they have warm colors as well as colors which are not as warm. It is also cool that people can correlate specific colors with feelings as well as emotions and mood.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

In this video, I feel the biggest impact was how the artist first captured the color in person and made a quick note of what was there and how bright or dull the colors were, and then went back to her studio to create the actual painting based on what she captured earlier. Her paintings are bright and provide a welcoming attitude.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

In the video i realized that when a artist wanted to paint a happy picture and give off positive feelings they used right colors such as pinks , yellows ,orange and when they wanted to show the complete opposite being dull and dark and mean . They would use dark colors such as red , black dark green and etc. This has impact on me because i never realized how much a painting could change my whole mood especially when going in a restaurant and even any place that holds paintings.

1.    For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The key concepts of the first video was basically the distinction between art and beauty. What people believe that beauty Is and what people believe that art really is. In this video they also spoke about philosphers and their different views of art and beauty.  From what they believed art was how they felt about artist and entertainments using art and things that people would consider right or wrong when it comes to what they know. As well as what is considered beautiful now as well as back in the old days. The video also presents the ideas of key figures in shaping and understanding aesthetics as well as speaking about how introspection entails that art and beauty are two different things. Plato believed that poetry was not art.

The second video spoke about aesthetics as well as explored a different dimension of art. From genetics to symbolism. The speaker went through definition of what art is and symbolic forms of art. He speaks about the evolutionary aspects of art and aesthetics. That starts from the beginning of time and how humans developed . He spoke about group selection as well as sexual selection and intersubject communication and social bonding. In this video he explores different conrtributions to art as well as things that we may have never guessed to play a role in what art is and how art is portrayed to us and other people around us as well as in different areas of the world.

2.    Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribution to the aesthetic theory in your response.

I believe that the philosopher Aristotle is important most important  because he said that beauty attracts the person who sees it .
He believed in Unity of action time and place .

3.   What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
I can say that their view of aesthetics and art are quite different  but it’s a different approach and is interesting to me. One author spoke about the  8 laws of art this was interesting to me because I never thought that deep into art to think that there were laws to what was and is and the second author one thing that was interesting to me was how he portrayed his research and explained rules as well that go with how a person recognizes art through feelings as well as emotion.

4.    How do the videos and article relate to the readings in the text?
The article and videos that we watched relate to the readings in the text because they speak aesthetics and in all these videos and pictures they explain different ways of seeing art, how different people understand art or how people can actually view something as art but someone else can believe that it isn’t art because it may not trigger the same emotions that it triggers for them. As well as what the rules are to classify something as art and how it appears and what makes certain art work more expensive. As well as how artist come up with ideas and how they do what they do. They all speak about the effects that art has on people as well.

5.    What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading in the text.

I Think that the video and articles do help clarify the reading in the text books and gives us a more in depth definition of art and more knowledge of where art comes from as well as what and how it affects our daily lives.  I understand so much more deeper now from just the videos how art can be defined differently by different people and how it can be portrayed in many different ways symbolically as well as emotions can trigger beautiful art work . The Videos were very informative and taught me a lot.
